In-House Recycling of Aluminum-Chips in Foundries

Al Chip Melting with the StrikoMelter®

For the first time in history a metal yield of 98% has been achieved in a foundry with a StrikoMelter® during in-house recycling of Al chips.
The pre-dried Al chips are fed into the side pocket of the StrikoMelter® and are drawn homogenously under the surface of the metal bath. There, they are melted under airtight conditions. For a maximum metal yield StrikoWestofen uses the Metaullics system.

A high profitability is guaranteed which can be increased further by an optimization of the chip pre-treatment.

As an alternative to the ChipMelter which is exclusively used with chip melting StrikoWestofen also offers, depending on the customer’s demand, the CombiMelter which incorporates comprises the ETAmax® shaft furmace for melting ingots and returns. This results in a very low energy demand due to the combined use of waste heat.

The ETAmax® - Economy Package of StrikoWestofen

Selective Detection of the Shaft Filling Level and Precise Filling for a Maximum Energy Efficiency.

The ETAmax® principle of the aluminum shaft melting furnaces ensures a maximum utilization of waste heat in the furnace shaft for the pre-heating of charge material.

The Economy Package for StrikoMelter® further optimizes the energy efficiency of shaft furnaces. This includes the extension of the furnace shaft and a shaft filling level control using a laser scanner. Therefore, the shaft filling level can now be controlled selectively and analyzed. As soon as the filling level falls below a critical value a feeding signal is issued. This guarantees an early charging without risking overfilling of the shaft. The StrikoMelter® with economy package has now been working for several months in a foundry in the south of Germany to full satisfaction of the customer and minimizes the energy consumption in melting aluminum.

A profitable Cycle:

Inhouse Recycling of AL Chips

More and more foundries satisfy their customers’ demand for completely machined Aluminium castings. This increases the amount of waste product in form of Aluminium chips. With a suitable recycling system it could be interesting from an economic point of view to recycle these chips.More and more foundries satisfy their customers’ demand for completely machined Aluminium castings.
